What Are Extractions?

Tooth extractions are a type of oral surgery performed right here in our Lansdowne, VA, office. It is a very common dental procedure with the goal of ultimately improving a person’s oral health. Extractions are the last resort after our team has considered other avenues for saving your tooth such as a root canal or dental crown. It usually means that the tooth is damaged beyond repair and the best course of action for your overall health is to remove it from the socket.

Reasons For Extractions

Our mission at Lansdowne Dentistry by Design is to provide effective treatments while educating you about the important steps to take at home in order to set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy, strong teeth. We know that when you experience oral health problems, it can greatly impact your overall quality of life and create a domino effect of other health issues. Dr. Khalil, Dr. Coyle and our team are here to offer honest communication and thoroughly explain why you may need tooth extractions, including:

  • Severe Tooth Decay (Cavities): When a cavity is too large to be repaired with dental restorations, such as a tooth-colored filling or a dental crown, an extraction may be the best option to restore your oral health and prevent further infection.

  • Impacted Teeth: When a tooth hasn’t come in fully and is stuck in the gum or is blocked by other teeth, it is considered impacted. Oftentimes, impacted teeth, especially wisdom teeth, can become infected if they are not treated or removed.

  • Gum Disease: Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, has many stages, and if too far advanced, then the tooth may cause serious damage to the tissues and bone. This can result in an extraction to preserve the integrity of the jawbone.

  • Dental Trauma: If you’ve experienced severe dental trauma, such as a hit to the mouth, that resulted in a fractured tooth, an extraction may be necessary.

What To Expect During Tooth Extractions

Your care and comfort is our top priority, and our team strives to make sure you feel as relaxed as possible during your procedure. Once you and your dentist decide that extractions are the best treatment option for you, our team will schedule your procedure, which may involve:

  • Digital X-rays to take a closer look at the tooth’s position and structural integrity
  • A local anesthetic to numb the gums around the tooth
  • Then, our dentists will carefully loosen and remove the tooth from the socket, which will be disinfected and clean

  • We will control any bleeding and apply stitches if necessary

  • Apply cold compresses to the outside of your mouth to help with any swelling

  • Make sure the incision heals properly, avoid drinking hot beverages and stick to soft, bland foods for the first few days like yogurt, mashed potatoes, applesauce and smoothies in a bowl with a spoon
  • Be careful brushing around the extraction area
  • Be sure to make your follow-up appointments so our team can make sure your healing is successful
